Brazil: President Temer offers condolences after plane crash in Colombia

Brazil, Brasilia
November 29, 2016 at 18:40 GMT +00:00 · Published

Brazilian President Michel Temer offered his condolences in the aftermath of the deadly plane crash near La Union, during an address from Brasilia on Tuesday. The plane crashed late on Monday was carrying members of the Brazilian Chapecoense football team.

In a televised address, the president expressed his “regret about the unfortunate incident that killed a football team from Chapeco, and the many who were with them.” He added that since the crash was made known to the government, all that could be done "besides pray for those who passed away" was to take measures to support the families who are in mourning. He said the Air Force was available to transport families, adding that "of course it's also necessary to transport the bodies, which is being done by the Foreign Ministry.”

There were 77 people on board the aircraft when it went down at 20:00 local time (01:00 GMT, Tuesday) in Colombia. The flight's destination, Jose Maria Cordova International Airport near Medellin, stated that the plane, travelling from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, announced that they were experiencing electrical failures while flying over the municipalities of La Ceja and La Union, declaring an emergency to the airport before losing contact.

Some 22 football players from the Brazilian team were aboard the flight, with a further 22 sports journalists onboard. The team was set to play against Atletico Nacional in the Copa Sudamericana finals in Medellin, Wednesday.
