New Zealand: 7 killed, 1 missing after fishing boat capsizes off Auckland coast
Seven people were killed with one missing after a fishing boat capsized near the shores of Auckland, Sunday. All the victims were of Pacific island ethnicity.
The small charter vessel with fishermen on board overturned in the Kaipara harbour. Three people managed to flee from the boat and survive, but seven others have been confirmed dead. The search for the missing man continues.
According to the police, all people on board, apart from the skipper were Pacific Islanders. Of the seven dead, "four are Tongan, one Samoan and one a Cook Islander. We believe the missing person is possibly Cook Islander," stated the Auckland police officer Willi Fanene.
He expressed his condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and called it "a great tragedy for the New Zealand fishing community in general, it is especially hard for the Pacific community".
