Peru: Protectionism must 'be defeated' - Pres. Kuczynski opens APEC Leaders Summit
Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said it was vital that “protectionism be defeated” as he opened the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders Summit in Lima on Friday.
Kuczynski referenced “recent elections, not only in the US” as evidence that “protectionist tendencies are taking over” and stressed the importance that “world trade grow again.”
Founded in November of 1989, APEC is a forum of 21 economies in the Asia-Pacific region. Together they seek to promote the liberalisation of trade and investment and foster business and economic cooperation.
The outgoing US President Barack Obama as well as the Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to hold keynote speeches at the summit on Saturday. Others involved include IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, entrepreneurs, investors and world-known business people such as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
