Switzerland: Ban Ki-Moon and Cypriot leaders meet for peace talks
"Make the most of the moment and the momentum", UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon advised the two of Cyprus as peace talks concerning the divided island began in Mont Pelerin on Monday.
During the next five days Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart Mustafa Akinci will try to reach a settlement, as well as "tackle other outstanding issues", under the auspices of UN Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide. Ban assured the leaders that they have his "full support and the commitment of the United Nations to assist them in whatever way to reach their shared goals". According to the UN Secretary General the Cypriot leaders are hoping to come to an agreement by the end of the year.
Cyprus remains divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded the island after a Greek inspired coup and today a United Nations ceasefire line still splits the island into two parts.
