Turkey: Scuffles break out at Cumhuriyet newspaper protest in Istanbul

Turkey, Istanbul
November 2, 2016 at 16:42 GMT -00:00 · Published

A scuffle broke out during the third day of protests in support of Turkey's leading opposition newspaper, Cumhuriyet, in Istanbul on Wednesday.

Cumhuriyet's editor in chief and at least 12 senior staff were detained on Monday, with Istanbul's prosecution office accusing the journalists of supporting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and of backing Fethullah Gulen, the US based cleric whom the Turkish government accuses of masterminding the failed July coup.

Cumhuriyet denies the allegations. The newspaper responded to the arrest by running the headline "We will not surrender" and by leaving blank spaces in the paper where the columns of the detained writers would normally be.

The detention of the journalists was widely criticised, but Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim made it clear that the EU's condemnation of the government's actions were of no importance to him, saying Turkey "does not care" about the European Parliament's declared 'red line' on press freedom in Turkey. Since the coup attempt in July nearly 37,000 people have been arrested and more than 100,000 people have been dismissed or suspended from government jobs.
