Italy: Renzi promotes Italy's role in EU ahead of referendum

Italy, Rome
October 29, 2016 at 20:54 GMT -00:00 · Published

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi spoke to a crowd of hundreds gathered in The People's Square, Rome, on Saturday to promote his proposed constitutional reforms and discuss Italy's role within the European Union (EU).

Of the EU, Renzi said Italy was "one of the countries that gets involved to guarantee freedom to the people that lose their freedom," cautioning "if we build walls, someone will be trapped inside the walls."

Renzi also exhorted those gathered to promote the constitutional reforms his government has put forward which would curb the powers of the Senate. "Italy is in front of a crucial choice for her future" said one supporter. The deciding referendum will be held on December 4.

Renzi's proposed reforms would shrink the Senate as an elected chamber and restrict its ability to veto legislation. Under the current system the upper and lower houses of parliament have equal power. Proponents of the reforms argue they will bring political stability to a country which has had 63 different governments since World War Two but critics worry the reforms remove vital democratic checks.
