Switzerland: Mosul offensive could displace one million - UNHCR spokesperson

The United Nations Human Rights Committee (UNHRC) warned that the Iraqi offensive to retake the city of Mosul from the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), could displace up to one million people from their homes, during a UNHRC meeting in Geneva, Tuesday.

UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) spokesperson William Spindler stated that there were "real fears that the offensive to retake Mosul could produce a humanitarian catastrophe resulting in one of the largest man-made displacement crisis in recent years," adding that "there are currently 3.3 million displaced Iraqis, approximately one in ten of the Iraqi population."

"We expect that up to one million people may be forced from their homes by this military operation, of whom 700,000 may be in need of shelter assistance, up to 200,000 people may be displaced in the first weeks of the operation," continued UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) spokesperson Jens Laerke.

Spindler commented on the UNHCR plans to deal with the possible crisis, stating "We already have five camps open, ready to shelter 45,000 people. There are plans for a total of 11 camps to open in the coming weeks, with a capacity for 120,000 people."

WFP spokesperson Bettina Luscher added that "We have over 14,000 tonnes of family food rations in warehouses near Mosul, that's enough for a million people for one month, around 200,000 families" adding that "immediate response rations" were "enough for 240,000 people."

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced early on Monday, the start of a large-scale military operation to liberate Mosul from IS. The group captured Mosul in 2014 and the offensive is now spearheaded by the Iraqi army and Kurdish militia, supported in the air by a coalition led by the United States. Mosul is the last major city in Iraq under the control of IS.
