Germany: We must strengthen our 'deterrent posture' toward Russia - Dutch DefMin

German Minister of Defence Ursula von der Leyen met with her Dutch counterpart Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in Berlin, on Monday, to talk about European security, relations with Russia and the joint Peshmerga-Iraqi Army offensive in Mosul.

Speaking on the European security, Hennis-Plasschaert stated that "Europe is less secure than five or ten years ago because our relationship with Russia has taken turn for the worst." The Dutch minister believes that the European security environment has deteriorated because of the alleged "Russia's aggression in Ukraine."

She continued, "it's unlikely that our relationship with Russia will improve any time soon. Therefore, we must shift our attention from just reassurance to strengthening our deterrent posture."

Moreover, Hennis-Plasschaert called Russia's stance on the Joint Investigation Team's (JIT) findings on MH17 crash "disrespectful."

Commenting on the recently started Mosul offensive, von der Leyen stressed that despite sending weapons to Kurdish Peshmerga forces, the US-led coalition "trained 11,000 Peshmerga soldiers." "According to the plan of the coalition, Peshmerga forces are playing one of the key roles. The offensive has been carefully prepared for a long period," she added.
