UN: Russia vetoes French-drafted UNSC resolution on Syria
Russia vetoed a French-drafted resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council, as the Russian draft resolution awaited voting, Saturday. The vote was 11 in favour, with two against and two abstentions.
UN Security Council members held negotiations throughout the past week on the French proposal, backed by the US and the UK. However, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, Vitali Churkin, stated on Friday that the measure was "very hastily put together" and designed "to cause a Russian veto."
The initiative foresaw the grounding of all aircraft over Aleppo and a no-fly zone enacted above the embattled city in addition to the ceasefire. Ahead of the voting, Churkin said it was "unprecedented for the members of the Council to ask a permanent member of the Security Council to limits its own activities." The Russian diplomat added that he had "the suspicion that the real motive is to cause a Russian veto."
