Russia: 'Internal contradictions' within the US govt led to Syria talks' collapse - Lavrov

Russian Federation, Moscow
October 4, 2016 at 14:25 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that “internal contradictions” within the US administration led to the collapse of the agreements on Syria. He was speaking during a meeting with Saad Hariri, the former Lebanese prime minister and current leader of Lebanon’s Future Movement, in Moscow on Tuesday.

Russia’s top diplomat said the US was “not able to fulfil their obligations to our agreements, not only regarding the disengagement of the moderate opposition from Jabhat al-Nusra." He also said the United States were not even able to implement “the extremely clear and concrete obligations for the unblocking of the Castello Road." Lavrov stated that “it is possible to settle this crisis only collectively and only together” with “the United States, with Europe and with all the key states of the region."

Saad Hariri said that “Russia is able to cope with the crisis in Syria and to find a fair solution." However, he also mentioned that “the political role of Russia” as well as of the United States and of all Middle Eastern countries “may have a great influence on the solution” of the conflict.

The US State Department announced on Monday that bilateral contacts between Moscow and Washington over the Syria crisis have been suspended.
