UN: Humanitarian Affairs exec emphasises dangers delivering humanitarian aid to Syria

United Nations, New York City
September 29, 2016 at 21:29 GMT -00:00 · Published

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O'Brian reported upon the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, at a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York, on Thursday.

Stephen O'Brien stressed, "Despite all our collective efforts which have been discussed in great detail, in this council, there has been no humanitarian access through cross border or cross line actors since early July. It should be noted that this is as a result of constraints by both the Syrian authorities and on state armed groups."

He detailed the dangers posed to civilians, "Furthermore despite the assertion of their being corridors available civilians wishing to travel in and out of eastern Aleppo are unable to do so in any significant numbers. You'd be the same, you just don't do it, if you have nowhere to go voluntarily and if the sniper is likely to take the shot anyway, as we have long said civilians cannot move when there are such levels of insecurity."
