Mexico: Huge blaze breaks out on Pemex oil tanker in Gulf of Mexico
Footage filmed in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, shows a firefighting boat attempting to extinguish a massive blaze aboard an oil tanker belonging to Mexico's state-owned energy company Pemex.
The fire broke out after an explosion off the coast of Boca del Rio, close to the port of Veracruz, earlier on Saturday. All 31 crew members were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.
The Burgos tanker was reportedly carrying around 168,000 barrels of oil and gasoline out of a possible 270,000, when the explosion occurred. A huge plume of smoke rose above the sea as other vessels pulled alongside the tanker and attempted to douse the flames.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Pemex have said that the blaze poses no risk to the population or environment.
