USA: Police brutality protests persist after curfew in Charlotte, NC

United States, Charlotte
September 25, 2016 at 09:11 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of people took the streets for the fifth night running in the centre of Charlotte, North Carolina, Saturday, following the fatal police shooting of a 43-year old African-American man Keith Scott.

The protesters marched through the streets of the city chanting slogans against police brutality and racism and holding placards reading "Stop killing black people," "Unarmed black people were killed at five times the rate of whites in 2015" and "Justice not justification for Keith Scott and Justin Carr." Scuffles erupted as police attempted to stop a fight between protesters. A heavy police and national guard deployment secured the city centre. with several police officers following the march.

Earlier this week, Charlotte police department released footage from the dashboard camera of one of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police vehicles at the scene of the shooting of Keith Scott. Scott's death is the latest incident in a long line of police shootings and has been met with outrage by the general public, the US African-American community, Black Lives Matter activists and other anti-racist groups.

The scale of the demonstrations over the shooting has prompted North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency and deploy the National Guard. Several arrests have been made during the protests in which a man, Justin Carr, died in a shooting. Local authorities tweeted that the man was killed by another civilian, a claim some protesters have disputed.
