USA: Legal observer sprayed with tear gas during protests in Charlotte

United States, Charlotte, North Carolina
September 23, 2016 at 09:27 GMT -00:00 · Published

Clashes between protesters and the police continued in the centre of Charlotte, North Carolina, on Thursday, following the fatal police shooting of an African-American man named Keith Scott. A legal observer was tear-gassed during the event.

The unidentified legal observer stated that he had his "legal observer hat on" and had identified himself as a legal observer when he was "targeted" by a police officer out of the group he was standing with.

The protesters had gathered to demonstrate the deadly shooting of 43-year-old African-American man, Keith Lamont Scott. According to police, officers went to a Charlotte apartment complex looking for a suspect with an outstanding warrant, Tuesday, when they saw Keith Lamont Scott exiting his car. Police claim that Scott was carrying a gun, his family insist he was carrying a book.

His death is the latest incident in a long line of police shootings and has been met with outrage by the general public, the US African-American community, Black Lives Matter activists and other anti-racist groups.

Anger over the shooting has sparked three nights of protests in North Carolina prompting Governor Pat McCrory to declare a state of emergency and deploy the National Guard. Several arrests have been made during the protests in which a man, Justin Carr, died in a shooting. Local authorities tweeted that the man was killed by another civilian, a claim some protesters have disputed. Said Barry Morrison, a protester and retired army veteran, "all I want is that footage. If a black man indeed shot a black man pointing a gun at him that footage would have been released last night."
