Turkey: German embassy closed over fears of attack by Erdogan supporters - reports
German authorities have temporarily closed the German embassy in Ankara, reportedly due to fears that the building might be targeted in attacks by supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The shuttered building was seen in the Turkish capital on Wednesday.
The purported threat appeared after the German magazine 'Der Spiegel' published an issue dedicated to Turkey with Erdogan on the front page, in which it characterised the president as a "dictator" and wrote "A country loses its freedom" on the cover. The Turkish Foreign Ministry branded the issue "provocative" and said it reflected a "prejudiced mindset." The ministry said the issue was "especially provocative" to Muslims. Its front cover featured minarets turning into military rockets and was published during the Islamic holiday of Eid.
The embassy and other consulate branches were closed for the period September 12-16. German officials have said the country's diplomatic offices have been shut simply due to the Islamic holiday.
