UK: Protesters demand closure of Yarl's Wood detention centre

United Kingdom, Bedford
September 10, 2016 at 19:53 GMT -00:00 · Published

Around 800 people gathered at Yarl’s Wood detention centre near Bedford on Saturday to campaign for the centre to be closed down.

Protesters surrounded the building, kicking the walls, chanting and waving smoke bombs to show their opposition to the immigration centre where people - overwhelmingly women - are detained without trial, sometimes for years.

One protester, Angela Udeni of Sisters Uncut, expressed her opposition, “Look at the windows they barely open, look at how high the fences are, these people haven’t committed any crimes, they’re not in prison, they’re being detained. It’s inhuman, it’s disgusting and it’s really not OK."

Udeni added, “Often many of the people in there don’t speak English, they don’t know their rights, they don’t know who to turn to, to get out of here. They’re kept here indefinitely.”

Yarl’s Wood opened in 2001 and currently holds over 400 people. Since its opening it has been constantly in the limelight for human rights campaigners who say that the conditions are terrible and the detainees don’t know when they will be released. Several instance of abuse have also been reported.
