UN: North Korea's nuclear test is 'brazen breach' of UN resolutions - Ban Ki-moon

United Nations, New York City
September 9, 2016 at 19:28 GMT +00:00 · Published

For the fifth time in recent years, the DPRK alone has broken the international norm against nuclear tests. This unacceptable act endangers peace and security in the region and is another vivid reminder of the urgent need to strengthen the global nuclear test ban regime.

I reiterate the united call of the international community on the leadership of the DPRK to reverse its course and commit to a path of denuclearisation. Rather than pursuing nuclear weapons and ballistic missile technology, the DPRK should be promoting the well-being of the country's people.

I count on the Security Council to remain united and take appropriate action. We must urgently break this accelerating spiral of escalation.

We are monitoring and assessing developments related to the nuclear test in close coordination with the concerned international organisations, including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation, and with interested parties.

Thank you."

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced North Korea's latest nuclear test and called on the UN Security Council to take measures in response to Pyongyang's actions, during an address in New York, Friday.

"I condemn in the strongest possible terms the underground nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This is yet another brazen breach of the resolutions of the Security Council,' he stated.

Later in the day, the UN Security Council (UNSC) is scheduled to hold a meeting to discuss possible actions to force North Korea to abandon nuclear weapons.

Ki-moon's statement came following Pyongyang's announcement that a 'high-level' nuclear weapon was tested successfully, the second successful test in eight months and the fifth one in the last ten years.

The UNSC has adopted five major resolutions since 2006 sanctioning North Korea for continuing to develop its nuclear weapons programme and calling on Pyongyang to dismantle its nuclear programme and abandon ballistic missile tests. The first two resolutions were passed shortly after North Korean nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009. The third followed one month after North Korea successfully launched a satellite in December 2012 and the fourth after a nuclear test in February 2013. The most recent was adopted in March 2016.

The latest nuclear test came only a few days after the country's launch of three ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan. The ballistic missiles, which were launched during the G20 summit in China, were reportedly fired from the south of Pyongyang.
