Italy: Pope Francis declares Mother Teresa a saint in Vatican canonisation

Holy See (Vatican City State), Vatican City
September 4, 2016 at 12:51 GMT -00:00 · Published

Hundreds of thousands of believers gathered for Sunday Mass at St Peter's Square in the Vatican City, as Pope Francis officially proclaimed famed charity worker Mother Teresa a saint.

Pope Francis stated that “after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother Bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a Saint and we enroll her among the Saints.”

Many people came to the Vatican specifically to witness Mother Teresa’s canonisation, with a reported 1,500 homeless people travelling from across Italy to join the festivities.

Born in 1910, Agnese Gonxha Bojaxhiu was raised in an ethnic Albanian family in what is now known as the Macedonian capital of Skopje. Joining the Irish order of Loreto she later moved to India to teach a school in Darjeeling circa 1929, where she was dubbed Therese. She went on to Calcutta in the 1940s to fight against poverty by setting up a series of sisterhoods that ran homes for abandoned children and the homeless.

Following Mother Teresa’s death in 1997 at the age of 87, the Catholic Church began steps towards canonising her, despite criticism that the famed nun was a hardline Catholic, reportedly refusing to take hygiene and areas of modern medicine seriously.
