Panama: 12 officers injured as students rail at dam opening on indigenous land

A group of Panama University students clashed with police outside their campus, Thursday, as they protested over the opening of the Barro Blanco Hydroelectric Dam on the Tabasara River in Chiriqui Province. At least 12 police officers were injured in the action which is already in its second day and is expected to continue.

The students turned out to support the claims of the Ngabe Bugle indigenous people that the multi-million dollar dam opening violates their right to manage their traditional territory. The project "damages the neediest residents of this country," said one student, suggesting the money should instead be invested in "school supplies for the indigenous population."

The dam has been dogged by protests since the plans were approved in June 2011. Protests forced its closure in 2015, but work has since continued and the reservoir was filled with water in May 2016.
