Germany: Berlin police to trial use of tasers on capital's streets

Berlin regional Senator for Interior Affairs Frank Henkel confirmed in Berlin on Wednesday that police officers in the capital city would soon be trialling the use of tasers.

Speaking at a joint press conference with the police commissioner, as well as Sebastian Kraus from the Department of Operational Services LKA6, Henkel made it clear that the planned trials are not just "a non-binding declaration of intent," but will definitely take place.

Henkel, who said he has long been an advocate of tasers, admitted that the use of the device tends to lead to heated debates. He called for an objective discussion, but also maintained that tasers "can save lives."

Kraus also attempted to convince the audience, by demonstrating the use of a taser as a deterrent, and stated that even showing an 'electric arc' in a conflict situation "already has a de-escalating effect on the police officer's opponent."

The Green Party has accused Henkel of using the introduction of tasers as a campaign move. Adversaries of the weapon claim that the electric shock can be dangerous or even fatal for people with heart conditions. If the trials are successful, Berlin would become the first place in Germany where regular police officers use tasers.
