Brazil: Zhukov praises Russian athletes' 'successful' performance at Rio Olympics

Brazil, Rio de Janeiro
August 21, 2016 at 23:10 GMT -00:00 · Published

The president of Russia's Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov praised the the performance of the Russian athletes at the Olympic Summer Games, as he was speaking at a final press conference ahead of the closing ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday.

"Our team has performed successfully from the very beginning of the Olympics. You have to admit that we never had such a diversity of medals in different sports in any Olympics before. 107 out of 280 athletes competing here won medals," Zhukov stated.

Commenting on the question of why the IOC has voted against a blanket ban of all Russian athletes, Zhukov said "Those who have advocated a hard line including to suspend cooperation with the IOC and to boycott the games - I think that this position is absolutely unacceptable for Russia's sport. Russia has to be part of the Olympic movement."

The director of the Russian Olympic Committee's Main Directorate for Participation in Olympic Sports Events Igor Kazikov admitted that many Russian teams, including the football and hockey squads, have been failing to qualify for the games for a long time - in the case of football since 1988. "We have to deal with that indeed. We need corresponding development programs for these sports," he concluded.

Zhukov took the opportunity to congratulate Double Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbaeva on being elected an IOC member on Sunday, calling it "one of the most significant messages of these Olympics."
