Brazil: Financial setbacks spell cuts for Rio Paralympics – IPC president

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced further significant budget cuts ahead of the Paralympics Games in a press conference in Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

The President of the International Paralympic Committee Philip Craven stated, "The current economic and political climate has made preparations extremely challenging, especially for the Rio 2016 organising committee, who we have partnered for the last seven years." He added that although the organising commitee had made progress, "the extra revenues will not fully plug the Rio 2016 deficit" and that further cuts were "likely to impact nearly every stakeholder attending the Games."

He explained that he hoped that the organising committee would soon pay the grants which "should have been paid by the organising committee to all 165 participating countries at the end of July."

The funds are pivotal for the transportation of the athletes to Rio. Craven stressed without them some nations might be unable to participate in the games. Nevertheless he insisted that the IPC were doing everything possible to ensure their participation in Rio.
