Brazil: Russian athlete Darya Klishina cleared for Rio Olympics

Brazil, Rio de Janeiro
August 15, 2016 at 16:10 GMT +00:00 · Published

The lawyer of the Russian track and field athlete Darya Klishina confirmed that her ban from the Olympics has been lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, proving that Darya is a clean athlete.

Her lawyer, Paul Greene stressed that, "Nobody can doubt her, I don't think there is any doubt at all, that this is a victory for her and for the individual rights of athletes who can stand up to a federation, when there are no legal grounds for a decision, can prevail and that's what happened."

She was notified of her ban to participate in the Olympics on August 6, after an investigation showed that past urine tests had possibly been manipulated. Her lawyer explained, "I don't think there should be any doubt that Darya is clean. And even with what was presented nothing was ever presented that showed anything other than that the IWF never made any implication otherwise. It had nothing to do with her, it had to do that even a clean athlete like her could still potentially be subject to manipulation and that sort of thing. After they hand there samples in."

Thanks to the new ruling by CAS she will be the only track and field athlete to be representing Russia in the Olympics. She will begin competing in her first Olympic games on Tuesday.
