Russia: Lavrov and Steinmeier clash over Aleppo’s humanitarian corridors

Russian Federation, Yekaterinburg
August 15, 2016 at 12:23 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier clashed over the use of the humanitarian corridors and the daily three-hour ceasefires in Aleppo, during a press conference in Yekaterinburg, Monday.

Lavrov stressed: "Of course, [three-hour pauses] are not sufficient but to extend their length, it is necessary to resolve the issues that I have just talked about. In the past, Russia and the US were able to reach agreements and announce a truce regime for 48 hours and even for 72 hours. As a result of these pauses, the humanitarian situation has been slightly eased. But their main result is that the terrorists' ranks have been replenished with 7,000 fighters, not to mention a large number of ammunition and weapons."

His German counterpart, Steinmeier noted that although he believes the three-hour ceasefire periods, also known as "humanitarian windows," will not drastically change the situation, they are "the best solution as opposed to the supply of humanitarian aid by air-lifting."

Earlier in the day, the two diplomats discussed the importance of closer Germany-Russia relations, noting that it is imperative that the two countries work together to reach ceasefire and elevate the humanitarian situation in Syria.
