Brazil: Anti-Rousseff demonstrators celebrate as Senate approves impeachment trial
Around thirty pro-impeachment demonstrators celebrated outside the National Congress building in Brasilia, Wednesday, as the Brazilian Senate voted in favour of holding an impeachment trial for suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
The Senate passed the motion to send Rousseff to trial with 58 voting for, 22 against and zero abstentions.
On August 4 the Special Committee of the Impeachment approved a report presented by Senator Antonio Anastasia against Rousseff, recommending that the suspended President should face trial.
If a majority of the senators vote to proceed with the impeachment trial, Rousseff will be suspended from office for 180 days. If Rousseff is convicted, Temer will serve as president until the end of 2018.
