USA: IS still directs and inspires attacks - Obama

United States, Washington DC
August 5, 2016 at 00:51 GMT +00:00 · Published

During a press briefing in Washington DC, on Thursday, US President Barack Obama discussed the positive progress being made against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

However, he maintained that the militant group is still engaging in the coordination of terrorist attacks further afield. Obama explained, “ISIL still has the ability to direct and inspire attacks. So we have seen terrible bombings in Iraq, Jordan, in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Afghanistan. Attacks on an Istanbul airport, a restaurant in Bangladesh, Bastille Day celebrations and a church in France, and a music festival in Germany.”

Obama conceded, “The decline of ISIL in Syria and Iraq appears to be causing it to shift to tactics that we've seen before, and an even greater emphasis on encouraging terrorist attacks, even in the United States."

Obama also discussed the recent return of hostages from Iran, maintaining that the USA did not pay ransom for these prisoners. He said, “The notion that we would start [paying ransom] now, in this high-profile way, and announce it to the world, even as we're looking into the faces of other hostage families, whose loved ones are being held hostage, and say to them that we don't pay ransom, defies logic.”
