Brasil: Olympic rings installed in Copacabana beach ahead of Rio 2016
The artist Elisa Brasil and olympic volunteers constructed and unveiled a model of the Olympic rings, made out of recycled materials, on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, two weeks ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The ceremony of unveiling the Olympic Ring monument took place 15 days before the Olympic Games will take place in Rio. The monument is 3 metres (10 ft) high and 6 metres (20 ft) long.
Elisa Brasil created the figure at the request of Rio De Janeiro authorities. According to Elisa, she needed "sixty-five kg of recycled plastic, but in total, we used more than two-hundred kg of recycled materials." The local NGOs collected the materials in the waters of Rio bay, which was supposed to be cleaned before the Olympics kicks off.. The figure will stand in front of Copacabana Palace Hotel.
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games will take place from August 5 until August 21, 2016. More than 10,500 athletes are expected to participate from 205 nations.
