USA: Baton Rouge hospital treats injured officers after deadly attack on police

United States, Baton Rouge
July 18, 2016 at 04:07 GMT -00:00 · Published

A small memorial site was set up by the entrance to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Centre in Baton Rouge, Sunday, where two police officers are currently receiving treatment after they were shot during a deadly attack on law enforcement in the beleaguered city earlier in the day.

One of the officers is in critical condition, the second is reportedly stable. As the law enforcement personnel underwent treatment, two armed police officers checked every car entering the hospital grounds as security remains tight.

Louisiana State Police confirmed that at least three police officers were killed in the shooting, with State Governor John Bel Edwards calling it an "unspeakable and unjustified attack".

Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police Michael Edmonson announced that "today at approximately 08:40 (13:40 GMT) several Louisiana law enforcement officers were shot near Airline Highway [...]. A call came in to central dispatch of the Baton Rouge City Police Department saying that it was a guy carrying a weapon, carrying a rifle walking in that particular area in at Airline and Goodwood." The suspect was killed by police.

He added that multiple officers had been transported to local hospitals for treatment and that three officers had died from their injuries, confirming that two of the victims were from the Baton Rouge police department and one from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

Relations between the police and the Baton Rouge community have been tense after the shooting of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white officers earlier this month.
