USA: 272 dead in South Sudan just 'tip of the iceberg', UN peacekeeping secretary reports

UN Undersecretary General for Peacekeeping operations, Herve Lasdous, expressed concern in New York City, Wednesday, over the recent fighting in Juba, South-Sudan, which reports claim has left at least 272 dead.

Addressing the Security Council meeting in Washington, Lasdous warned that number of people dead was likely to be much higher than the initial given figure, "The initial government figures report that at least 272 have been killed, including 33 civilians, but I would believe that this is only the tip of the iceberg, given alarming reports indicating that over the last few days many civilians were barred from reaching safer grounds, including the compounds of the United Nations."

Riek Machar, President of South Sudan responded, pleading for the UN’s cooperation, "The transitional government is the only viable mechanism to fully implement the agreement. We call on you to collaboratively work with the transitional government national unity, on how best we can together deliver peace and security to my people."

The warning comes after a two-day ceasefire in Juba following the fighting on Friday, Sunday and Monday. At least 42,000 people have fled their homes and are now living in UN bases, aid groups and churches.
