UK: Legal basis for military action "far from satisfactory" - Chilcot announces

United Kingdom, London
July 6, 2016 at 11:33 GMT +00:00 · Published

Sir John Chilcot spoke to a press conference in London, on Wednesday, upon the release of the long-awaited 2.6 million word report into the Iraq War.

In his speech, Chilcot stated, "The UK chose to join the invasion of Iraq before the peaceful options for disarmament had been exhausted. Military action at that time was not a last resort." He also concluded, "The dossier on Iraq was made on the basis of flawed intelligence and assessments."

Chilcot went onto condemn the military planning and preparations for stablilising Iraq, after Saddam Hussein had been ousted from power. He said, “Despite explicit warnings, the consequences of the invasion were underestimated. The planning and preparations for Iraq after Saddam Hussein were wholly inadequate."

The report comes after a seven year televised inquiry, in which Tony Blair and other government officials at the time of the Iraq invasion were called to give evidence of their account of events. Protests in London were taking place to coincide with the report's release.
