Austria: Heineken showcases 'sustainable' beer brewery in Goss

Austria, Goss, Leoben District of Styria
July 4, 2016 at 22:27 GMT +00:00 · Published

The chief brewer of Heineken's first large-scale zero carbon brewery, Andreas Werner, presented the Goss brewery, in the Leoben District of Styria on Monday.

The facility, which is producing Heineken's famous Gosser brand, runs on several forms of sustainable energy extraction and does not extract carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"This is a plant to process spent grain, which we have built together with the company BDI in the brewery of Goss. It is being used to transform spent grains - a remnant arising during the brewing process - into biogas and manure with the help of microorganisms," explained Werner while assuring that the brewery "renounces fossil fuels throughout the whole production process and therefore does not emit climate-damaging carbon dioxide."

Elaborating on the energy generation, the head brewer said "We are winning our energy from the sun, from our wastewater, biogas, from our neighbourhood that has an energy surplus, which reaches us via a pipeline."

Commenting on the question whether the facility can contribute to reducing climate change, Werner acted modestly, predicting that: "This will reduce climate warming, although not measurably and we will not save the world. However, if everybody did something like we do and if everybody contributed his little share, the climate will improve again."
