UK: Londoners divided after UK votes to leave EU

United Kingdom, London
June 24, 2016 at 16:36 GMT -00:00 · Published

British people queued up outside currency exchange stores in London, Friday, as the British Pound dropped to its lowest point in over 30 years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union in a national referendum.

"I think it's going to be bad for Britain's strength as a kind of world power with world influence," noted one Londoner, before adding "I am really sad that it looks like we are leaving."

Another took a more optimistic note, stating "all them politicians, basically they live in big houses, they don't know what the working people feel, and they showed them, they shocked them, which is wonderful," adding that they should "listen to the people and get off their high horses and listen to us. Because we put them there, we can take them out of there."

With the pound plummeting to around 1.35 US Dollars, its lowest value since 1985 following the results of the Brexit referendum, the Bank of England has stated that 'all necessary steps' will be taken to maintain Britain's financial stability.

On Friday morning the Electoral Commission reported that the Leave campaign had clinched a win, with some 52 percent of the electorate voting for Brexit from an estimated 72 percent voter turnout. London and Scotland polled predominantly for remain, but every English region outside the capital voted in a majority to leave the EU.

Shortly after the official results were announced British Prime Minister David Cameron stated that he would resign as the country's leader before the autumn during an address from Downing Street after being an integral part of the remain campaign.
