Italy: Rome mayoral election 1st round winner Raggi casts 2nd round vote
Virginia Raggi, the Five Star Movement's (M5S) candidate for the mayoral elections in Rome, cast her vote in the second round of mayoral elections in the capital on Sunday. Raggi won a majority in the first round of voting but didn't secure the above-50 percent needed to avoid a second round.
The latest polls are predicting Raggi to attain close to 40 percent of the vote, with her nearest rival, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's favourite Roberto Giachetti, winning just 21 percent. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote in the current round, a run-off between the top two candidates will be held on June 19.
The Five Star Movement is an anti-establishment party, which has grown to become one of Italy's largest parties according to some polls. It promises a referendum on the Euro and a digital democracy, giving voters a direct say in policies.
