Russia: Freed Ukrainian journalists speak out following Ukraine-Russia prisoner swap

Russian Federation, Moscow
June 14, 2016 at 19:29 GMT +00:00 · Published

Two Ukrainian journalists Elena Glishchinskaya and Vitali Didenko addressed the press as they touched down at Moscow's Vnukovo airport, Tuesday, following a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.

"Russia intervened in our case and we were rescued. It is a miracle which allows us to be free people," Glishchinskaya told journalists, before adding that there case "is a purely political…It is so-called hunting for separatists."

"We were arrested as activists of the People's Parliament of Bessarabia, national-cultural movement, which has almost nothing to do with politics. However, the authorities considered it as contradictory to the general political line," explained the Glishchinskaya.

Glishchinskaya (and her child who she gave birth to while in custody) and Didenko were swapped to a convicted spy Yuri Soloshenko and a member of the Ukrainian radical Right Sector Gennadi Afanasiev. Earlier in the day Russia President Vladimir Putin issued pardons to both of them. According to Russia's Federal Security Service, Soloshenko tried to illegally purchase components for the S-300 anti-aircraft complex. Afanasiev was sentenced to seven years in jail after being found guilty on trying to commit acts of terrorism in Crimea.

The movement of the four prisoners echoes the procedure that enabled Nadezhda Savchenko to go back to Ukraine while Alexander Alexandrov and Eugene Erofeev returned to Russia. That move was welcomed by the OSCE and others as assisting to de-escalate tensions in east Ukraine where low-intensity clashes continue.
