USA: 'Reinstate the assault weapons ban' - Obama urges action following Orlando shooting

United States, Washington DC

US President Barack Obama delivered a speech to the press at the Department of Treasury in Washington DC, Tuesday, where he addressed the guns policies in the US.

Obama said that "we have to make it harder for people who want to kill Americans to get their hands on weapons," and added that "there are common sense steps that could reduce gun violence, and could reduce the lethality of somebody who intends to do other people harm."

He went on to say that "people with possible ties to terrorism who aren't allowed on a plane, shouldn't be allowed to buy a gun" and called to "reinstate the assault weapons ban" in order to "make it harder for terrorist to use this weapons to kill us." Otherwise, he stated, "this kinds of events are going to keep on happening."

In the early hours of Sunday, a gunman opened fire in 'Pulse,' an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida. At least 50 people have been declared dead while a further 53 are injured, many of whom are in critical condition. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11. Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a U.S. citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the attacker.
