German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang expressed their condolence to the victims of the Orlando LGBT nightclub shooting, which left 50 dead and scores injures in the central Floridian city on Sunday, during a joint press conference in Beijing, Monday.

The German Chancellor is currently on an official visit to Beijing to co-chair the fourth round of China-Germany intergovernmental consultations.

"Our hearts are heavy, and I think I can speak in name of all those that are here as guests from Germany," stated Merkel, adding "our thoughts are with the relatives and friends [of victims] and also to those that are donating blood and also helping the injured in other ways."

The Chinese Prime Minister stated that "we come together to show our condolences. The Chinese people are against terrorism and we feel deeply saddened for the departed and we want to show our support to the victims' families.

Fifty people were killed and 53 injured in a shooting at the LGBT nightclub 'Pulse' in Orlando on Sunday, with Mayor Buddy Dyer confirming the numbers during a press briefing later in the day. The shooting is the deadliest attack in the US since 9/11.

Omar Siddiqui Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent living in Port St. Lucie, has been identified as the culprit. He was killed during the SWAT operation at the club.

Mateen reportedly claimed links to the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) before carrying out the attack, but officials have stated that the militant group's relations with the individual could be tenuous.
