Brazil: 'Temer out!' Protesters decry acting president's reforms in Sao Paulo
Hundreds of protesters railed at acting President Michel Temer in Sao Paulo, Wednesday, and the so-called ‘coup’ against suspended-President Dilma Rousseff.
Pro-Rousseff protesters marched with flags and banners along the Paulista Avenue, calling for Temer to step down, with students also out in force to demonstrate against the acting president’s education reforms. Numerous police units were present, and there have been no reports of violence or clashes.
The protest is one of many to hit main cities in Brazil, following what demonstrators have called a ‘coup’ against suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
On May 12, the Senate voted 55 to 22 in favour of impeaching Brazil's first female president, who will now be suspended for up to six months while a committee investigates whether she broke the country's budget laws ahead of her re-election in 2014.
Temer will serve as acting president throughout the trial, ending 13 years of rule by the Workers' Party. If Rousseff is convicted, Temer will serve as president until the end of 2018.
