Uzbekistan: Russia willing to coordinate with US-led coalition in Syria, Iraq - Lavrov

Uzbekistan, Tashkent
May 24, 2016 at 23:35 GMT -00:00 · Published

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered a statement to the press on the sidelines of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tashkent, Tuesday.

Discussing the fight against militants in Syria and Iraq, Lavrov said: "We agreed with our American partners – not right away and overcoming their reflections, doubts and even resistance – to move from an exchange of information to the coordination of our actions in the fight against terrorism."

"We are convinced that it could be possible to liberate these localities more effectively and faster – I am referring to Raqqa and to Mosul in Iraq – if our military men were able to coordinate their actions earlier. But at the moment there is a chance that such coordination can take place," he added.

Commenting on the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO meeting, the Russian Foreign Minister said: "We managed to prepare a solid package of documents, which will be submitted to the heads of states at the Council of Heads of States of the Shanghai Organisation, which will take place here in Tashkent in a month. First of all, the major political document will be the Tashkent Declaration dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the SCO."

The SCO is a Eurasian political and economic organisation which was founded in 2001 by the leaders of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The aim of SCO is to strengthen the political and economic cooperation between the participating countries.
