Brazil: Protesters sing against Temer abolishing Ministry of Culture
An artistic protest took place in the occupied and recently defunct Ministry of Culture, in Rio de Janeiro, Tuesday. Ministry of Culture buildings in other cities, such as Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte, have also been occupied by protesters.
Hundreds of protesters began occupying Gustavo Capanema Palace, which also houses the National Arts Foundation (FUNARTE), on Monday, following the closure of the ministry by Acting Brazilian President Michel Temer. The demonstrators were also calling for Temer's resignation under the slogan, "Temer get out."
Having abolished the Ministry of Culture, the sitting president ruled to incorporate the department under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education. This has provoked high-profile protests from Brazilian artists and creative professionals; Brazilian filmmakers held up signs on the Cannes red carpet on Tuesday, in order to draw attention to the issue.
