Russian scientists are said to have created 'quartz coins,' which can store large amounts digital data for an unprecedented number of years, at the Dimiti Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology in Moscow, Thursday, May 5.

The head of the laboratory Ivan Glebov stated that "this technology lets us achieve the most perfect immortality for digital data that is saved on quartz glass."

Speaking on the production process, the laboratory engineer Georgi Shakhgildyan said "laser beams are focused on a volume of disk which is made of quartz glass and by a method of motion of this disk, dots are formed [which contain data]."

The Quartz Coin Project Leader, Pyotr Khenkin, said the breakthrough will solve a lot of problems for major institutions, as "the problem of longevity of archival data is a real one especially for state archives and for state library funds, defence production enterprises and medical establishments."
