Russia: Hundreds attend funeral of officer killed at Palmyra

Russian Federation, Gorodki, Orenburg

Russian special forces officer Alexander Prokhorenko, who was killed in Syria during the battle for Palmyra, was buried with full military honours in his home town of Gorodki, in Russia's Orenburg Region, on Friday.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of local residents paid their last respects to the officer at a public remembrance ceremony at the local House of Culture.

The remains of the Russian soldier were delivered to the Orenburg region from Moscow, where his family received two French WWII medals from the Mague couple, who had learned of Prokhorenko's exploits and decided to hand the heirlooms to his family as a mark of respect.

Alexander Prokhorenko was operating as a forward air controller calling down airstrikes around the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. He died on March 17 after ordering an airstrike on his own position, when surrounded by Islamic State fighters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded Prokhorenko the nation's highest military honour, the Hero of the Russian Federation.
