Greece: Refugees adjust to heavy rainfall at Idomeni camp

Greece, Idomeni
April 29, 2016 at 17:23 GMT +00:00 · Published

Refugees at the Idomeni camp attempted to adjust their daily lives to intermittent bouts of rainfall, Friday, as the inclement weather causes them to halt or modify many of their daily activities.

Footage shows pools of muddy water right next to the refugees' tents. Several of the tents are seen with additional protection to prevent leakage, while children at the camp seem oblivious to the deteriorating conditions as they stomp and play in the mud.

A reported 10,000 refugees are stranded at the Idomeni camp, on the border between Greece and Macedonia. Greek officials have reportedly distributed leaflets over the past couple of days, urging the residents to abandon the camp and head towards Thessaloniki, where they will be transferred to the new refugee hotspots.

Greek officials have stated that there will be four new refugee hotspots in two cities: Oraiokastro and Kaloxori. The hotspot at Oraiokastro will be an old factory belonging to the EXELKA company, while the Kalochori hot-spots will include an old factory; the base of an old logistics company; and an old supermarket storage facility.

Greek authorities reportedly aim to settle at least 4,500 people at the aforementioned hotspots, which reportedly constitutes just under half of those currently residing at Idomeni. The new hotspots are still in the process of being set up.
