Germany: Historic Lenin head statue from GDR on display at Spandau Museum
The head of what was once a 19-metre tall (62 ft) statue of the former head of Soviet Russia Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, alias Lenin, was finally unveiled at the Historical Museum in the former Spandau Citadel in Berlin, Wednesday, after it was excavated from a forest south-east of the German capital last year.
According to the Head of the Spandau Historical Museum, Andrea Theissen, after the German reunification in 1990, most of the Communist and Socialist monuments in East Germany were either dismantled or buried including the Lenin statue.
The 1.7-metre high (five ft) head of the Soviet leader, together with around 120 parts of the granite statue, remained buried for over 20 years after former Berlin mayor Eberhard Diepgen ordered its removal from an East Berlin square in 1991. The statue was inaugurated in 1970 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lenin's birth.
The Head of Lenin monument is part of the "Unveiled. Berlin and its Monuments" project which includes around 100 statues. The exhibition will open its doors to the public on Friday and will become a permanent part of the museum collection.
