Japan: Emergency services rush to aid earthquake victims in Kumamoto
Police, firefighters and Self-Defense Force personnel delivered aid to the citizens of Minami Aso in the Kumamoto prefecture of Japan, Sunday, and prepared rescue operations after two powerful earthquakes struck southwestern Japan a little over 24 hours apart.
Many people affected by the earthquakes remain stranded in collapsed homes and buildings, particularly in towns and villages where downed bridges or landslides blocked key roads and highways. Emergency services are looking for eight missing people following a landslide that caused a highway to collapse in Minami Aso earlier on Sunday.
At least 32 people died and hundreds were injured in Saturday's earthquake following an initial quake on Thursday that killed nine people.
