Brazil: Protesters decry 'coup' in Rio ahead of Rousseff’s impeachment vote
Supporters of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff held a Carnival-themed protest in Rio, Saturday, to demonstrate against the president’s impeachment.
One protester called the dispute a “coup”, saying, “Those rightist people seeking a coup want to put an end to social rights; they want to end with Mercosul, and they want PreSal and Petrobras to be given away. We will not allow that, there will be no coup.”
The lower house of the National Congress of Brazil, the Chamber of Deputies, is expected to vote on the impeachment process against the president on Sunday. If two-thirds of the 513 delegates in the lower chamber vote in favour of the impeachment, the matter will then be sent to the Senate, who can decide whether or not to put Rousseff on trial.
