Brazil: Impeachment debate kicks off at Brazil's lower chamber of Congress

Discussions on whether to impeach Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff kicked off at the lower chamber of Brazil's Congress in Brasilia, Friday, with the crucial vote scheduled for Sunday.

Tension was high at the Brazilian Congress' lower chamber at the beginning of the session, with the lawmakers backing impeachment alleging that fiscal rules were violated by Dilma Rousseff's administration "because she wanted to be re-elected and be president for four more years," according to author of the Impeachment process Miguel Reale Junior. Nevertheless, many of those demanding impeachment face grave accusations of corruption themselves.

On the other hand, Rousseff's supporters insisted that she did nothing illegal, as similar accounting techniques were used by previous presidents of the country. In the opinion of Jose Eduardo Cardozo, Brazilian Atorney General, "there was a violence against the democratic state because threat and retaliation cannot be the key factor to impeach a President."

The Chamber of Deputies will vote on Sunday whether to advance with the process. If 342, two-thirds of the 513 delegates in the lower chamber, vote in favour of the impeachment, the matter will then be sent to the Senate, who can decide whether or not to put Rousseff on trial.

Rousseff faces charges that her administration broke government budget laws in order to support her re-election in 2014, of a value said to be worth as much as 1 per cent of the national GDP of Brazil, currently the world's seventh-largest economy.
