France: Tens of thousands hold Paris sit-in to decry labour reforms

Tens of thousands of anti-government activists attended a sit-in protest against proposed labour reforms on the Place de la Republique in Paris on Monday.

The nationwide nocturnal sit-ins - which experts consider reminiscent to the Occupy Wall Street-style of protesting - are held under the motto 'Nuit Debout', or 'Rise up at Night'. Having started on March 31, Monday's sit-in was the 12th in a row.

Police forces and emergency services were on high alert following reported escalations at recent sit-ins, where protesters allegedly rampaged on the streets of Paris. Hundreds are said to have demolished bank facades, thrown objects at a police station, and also engaged in extensive clashes with police officers in the side streets near Place de la Republique and on the square itself.

Commonly referred to as the 'El Khomri law' after French Labour Minister Myriam El Khomri, the reforms will look at almost all aspects of France's labour laws; maximum working hours, holidays and breaks, among other areas will be open to negotiation as the government attempts to liberalise France's labour market. French President Francois Hollande is said to be attempting to lower the country's unemployment rate below 10 percent.
