Argentina: Armenian community march on Azeri embassy over Karabakh conflict

Argentina, Buenos Aires
April 6, 2016 at 01:16 GMT +00:00 · Published

Members of the Armenian community of Buenos Aires gathered in front of the Azerbaijani embassy in the Argentinian capital, Tuesday, railing at what they see as Turkish and Azeri aggression in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Protesters rallied waving Armenian flags and holding banners with messages such as "no to the military offensive of Azerbaijan against the civil population in Nagorno Karabakh" or "Karabakh=Armenia." According to one of their representatives, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan "must be brought to an international court of justice to be judged for crimes against humanity."

Earlier on Tuesday, Baku and Yerevan agreed on a ceasefire after four days of fighting. OSCE officials have been dispatched to the region to monitor the situation.

The hostilities in the region restarted on Friday night, with Armenia and Azerbaijan both blaming each other for ceasefire violations. According to reports from Colonel Viktor Aroustamyan of the Artsakh Defence Army, 20 ethnic Armenians had died during the fighting as of Monday. At least 16 Azerbaijani soldiers have been killed according to the most recent numbers released by the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry.

The first open conflict started in 1988, when Nagorno-Karabakh, a predominantly ethnic Armenian mountainous region, broke away from the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.

Nagorno-Karabakh is recognised by the United Nations (UN) as being part of Azerbaijan but has been under the control of Armenian military and separatist forces since 1994.
