Russia: First launch from new Vostochny Cosmodrome scheduled for April
The first launch from the newly built Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia's Far East is scheduled for late April, said Head of Roscosmos State Corporation for Space Activities, Igor Komarov, during a press conference in Moscow, Wednesday.
"The meeting of the state commission will be held next week, where the operational procedure and the date of the first launch will be determined. According to all operations, the first launch is scheduled for the last ten days of April," he explained, before adding that the full capacity of the new cosmodrome will be reached in 2018. Moreover, "in the future we plan from eight to ten launches a year not only under the federal space program, but commercial launches as well."
The Vostochny Cosmodrome is set to be Russia's first civilian spaceport and will take over from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome. President Vladimir Putin has described the cosmodrome as one of the most ambitious projects in Russia's history.
