Netherlands: Ukrainian FinMin touts association deal ahead of Dutch referendum

Netherlands, Nootdorp
March 30, 2016 at 17:19 GMT +00:00 · Published

Ukrainian Minister of Finance Natalie Ann Jaresko attended the Ukraine-Netherlands Business Forum in Nootdorp, Wednesday, to promote the proposed association agreement between the EU and Ukraine ahead of a Dutch referendum on the issue.

She stated that "Ukrainians want to be Dutch partners" and that the Netherlands stands to make the biggest gains from closer bilateral ties. "Ukraine wants to be a very successful part of a very large global market," Jaresko stated, adding that "Ukraine is absolutely committed to continuing its structural reforms." She stressed, however, that "the decision of the Dutch people is the decision of the Dutch people."

Jaresko also stated that this winter was the first in which Ukraine had "not imported Russian gas," stating that "we did not have to." Jaresko went on to say that Ukraine had accessed "one billion dollars of revolving loans to continuously enable us to buy gas when it is less expensive." The supplies were largely of Russian gas purchased from Slovakia.

The Netherlands-Ukraine Business Forum was created to inform potential investors about the opportunities of closer ties between the two markets.

A consultative referendum on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement is due to be held in the Netherlands on April 6.
